The Mechanics of Passing: Portraying Non-Binary Experiences in Digital Play

May 2022

Abstract

Media representation of all types of people is important, both for the people it represents and the broader public. We argue that non-binary people are a significantly under-represented group, specifically within the medium of video games, and we describe the process of designing a queer video game, which we have titled FIT, that is focused on a non-binary character and uses game mechanics to represent, explore, and discuss some of the experiences that non-binary people can face.
